When he first came to John Howard SENB, he was desperate, and tired, and had it in him for one last ditch effort. He showed up in person to the main office. He was part of the “hidden homeless” population, as many nights he found himself couch-surfing, or being able to stay with his partner. He was using opiates, stimulants, anything that felt good and would keep him going, but still dull the emotional and physical pain. He is affected by bi-polar and ADHD and was untreated.

His decision to show up and advocate for himself was not lost on the staff of JHS. He was immediately connected to the outreach team, and later to housing and has been successfully housed for approximately two years. With stable housing, he has been connected to the right care and began a treatment plan including a long-acting injection for his mental health, as well as Sublocade to help ease opiate cravings.

Though ongoing health conditions prevent him from working full-time, he started working part time with another agency in the city, and the pride he takes in his work is unmatched. He was given not hand outs, but hand ups and he so grateful for them all.

He now requires minimal case management support and discussions have begun regarding transferring his file to an unsupported unit through HNB.

His journey shows what’s possible when people are met with true compassion, support, and a chance.
