11th annual Report Card on Homelessness for Greater Moncton launched today
Shelter use increases despite 4% decrease in number of individuals accessing homeless shelters in 2017
The Eleventh Report Card on Homelessness in Greater Moncton was launched April 30th, 2018 at our annual Community Breakfast event.
The number of people accessing shelters in Greater Moncton decreased slightly by 4% in 2017, with 729 unique individuals who stayed in a shelter during the year, compared to 759 a year earlier. However we are seeing an increasing number of shelter users staying for longer periods of time. The average length of stay per admission increased from 6.07 days in 2016 to 8.48 days in 2017.
On the surface it appears there is an improvement in the homeless situation with less people requiring services, however the severity of homelessness is deepening for a segment of the population who cannot find affordable housing and who may require supports to maintain their housing.
